Training Hours: Ride: 02:39 Run: 00:00 Other: 00:00

Insulin Delivery Summary:
Daily Total: 38.99 units
Meal: 14.20u
Corr: 2.90u
Basal: 21.89u

Daily Carb Intake Bolused For: 228g

After work I headed over to the UNC Wellness Center so I could get changed and head out for a short training ride.  I set a temp basal rate of a 60% reduction at 16:30 and was hoping to be out on the Superfly by 17:30.

It was VERY hot today - true air temp of 98 and high humidity.  I was going to ride with my new Osprey pack, but deceided against it as it was just too warm to try anything new.

I was running the Superfly mostly loaded.  I have taken off the aero clip-on bars as I could barely reach them with the length of the top tube.  I tried adjusting them, but they just didn't work. So off they came - just something not usable that added weight.  I will be adding a pair of Ergon grips with built in bar ends to give me another riding position.

I mounted my bottle cages to my fork legs using Elite VIP Universal 22-50mm Cage Mounts.  Road with these today using 24oz bottles.  They worked great, but I need to tighten them up just a touch.  They moved a little bit (like 2mm).  Easy to reach and easy to use.  Perfect.

Tried to stay on the nutrition, but it was just too hot.  About 75 mins in my BG had fallen to a 62.  I reached for some fast acting (my stand-by M&Ms), but they had literally melted to nearly unusable.  I was able to lick a little chocolate out of the wrapper, but that was about it.

In order to correct and raise my BG, I suspended insulin delivery for 90 minutes.

This worked great!  I re-initiated delivery about 20 minutes before getting back to the Wellness Center, and, once arriving there at 20:38, my BG was 89.  Perfect.

I delivered a post ride bolus of 3.1u in order to prevent the normal BG spike that occurs post ride, and headed home to get some dinner.

During my TwitCast earlier today, I had mentioned that I have postponed my Tour Divide start by 2 weeks.  Basically this was the result of discussion with the race promoter (Matt Lee) and some of the veteran racers who are returning to attempt Tour Divide again.

During this winter the rockies got an unprecedented amount of snow fall.   The powers that be at Tour Divide are reporting that certain passes in Canada, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado have upwards of 15' of snow still on them.  They are busy rerouting parts of the race to avoid these areas, and are concerned about the amount of snow and flooding.

I received a personal email from Matt Lee part of which read "The snow situation is so bad riders are going to be postholing for MILES at time. So much is unknown. Flooding is a big concern. Bridges may be out. Just this morning I got news that the route between Lincoln and Helena is buried. I am scrambling to create detours all over the place. I am afraid 2011 Grand Depart is going to be a disaster. If I were you, I would seriously consider delaying your start".

Given these statements and the actions of other veteran racers, I decided to wait two more weeks.  This provides a greater degree of safety for me and will elevate at least a smidge of pressure off of the race organizers.

How is this possible?  Well there are two options for racing Tour Divide.  The first is the Grand Depart which was my original plan.  The racers leave Banff on June 10th at 9:00am in a mass start.

The other less used option is known as ITT-Divide.  This is basically an Individual Time Trail of the Tour Divide race route.  The organizers are notified of your start time and location, and, using the same SPOT device tracking method used during the Grand Depart start, track your progress.  This is the method I am racing the TD under.  More details about this can be found on the Tour Divide ITT-D page.

So I leave for Canada on June 20th, and I begin my Tour Divide race on Friday June 24th at 07:00am.

Everything else remains the same.  Exactly the same.

Same rules.

Same route.

Same challenge.

Slightly different start date.

Thank you for the continued support and encouragement.  It is so appreciated - I just can't tell you how much.

Recently I discovered how powerful a friendship within the DOC ( Diabetic Online Community) can be. I have met some amazing people. I have witnessed people offering love and support and kindness and it humbles me.

Thank you!
Tony has been incredibly blessed with an enormous amount of support as the TOUR DIVIDE start date approaches, and he would like to take a moment to say thank you to each of you who offered kind emails, posted to his social networking sites, followed him on Twitter, Facebook, and the faithful who read his blog. He is moved beyond words especially by those friends who generously donated to Taproot films kickstarter teaser to help make Tony's documentary film a reality. None of this is possible without your support.

There is a special friend, Andy Nook, by way of Boston, who has championed the cause in a big way by posting Tony's TD info and film teaser to his blog and Type1Rider, already a fan, wants to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!

If you haven't checked out Andy's blog, we highly recommend it!

Training Hours: Ride: 02:33 Run: 00:00 Other: 00:00

Insulin Delivery Summary:
Daily Total: 45.87 units
Meal: 10.60u
Corr: 7.00u
Basal: 28.27u

Daily Carb Intake Bolused For: 190g

Had a great ride in some unbelievably warm weather here in NC.  To be honest, still working out the best way to pack the Superfly for Tour Divide.  I am not quite happy or comfortable with the way things are, and I am still trying to squeeze in all of the diabetes related supplies.  They are taking up more room then I initially thought.

LOTS of things happened this week (more info on all that coming tomorrow), so it was great to just be on the bike and riding though the NC country side.

I had some ideas when I got back, and I will make some major mods to the bike tomorrow before heading out.

BGs where a little off today during the ride.  I ended up running the temp basal as low as a 85% reduction.  It recovered, but not really until I spent 15-20 minutes just stopped.  That would be the exact plan when on TD.

Later on in the we made a list of all the tasks yet to do, and organized the items to be shipped to the Post Offices on the course for resupply.  (Again, more about all of that later).

I am desperately trying to get caught up, and reach out to a number of people.

I cannot express, truly, how much I appreciate the words of kindness and support from so many of you.

Thank you just doesn't cover it.

:)

Tell me can you hear me now
if not, then I can try to sing real loud
What's it like up on the other side of the clouds?
I hope I'm just like you
I hope I turn out to be as good as you.

Training. When does one train, when one works full time, parents two active young boys, and runs a non profit organization designed to encourage people whose lives are affected with Type 1 Diabetes to live life to the fullest? Well, on Monday, you don't...Tuesday, after work, before dinner, between the twit cast and the video shoot for the JDRF, and well into the night past most bedtimes.

That is the schedule our friend is living with today and everyday. Training. NOT enough hours in the day to train.

Taproot Films is at a flurried pace capturing every move Tony is making, and interviewing friends and family and watching the clock....tick....tock....sixteen days.

Tony is in the final stretch of preparations and the heat is on. He is attempting  to shore up any last minute details with his personal affairs while he is on the trail, and in constant contact with Trek Raleigh to procure the final pieces of equipment needed and to prepare his bike,  which I have coined "Buck" for shipment.

Next on the to do list:  MAPS. Much time is needed to prepare this trip and mapping out lodging, bike repair shops, water locations, food, and postal stops to recieve much needed diabetic refills is crucial and far behind in the planning stages at this point. Tony is feeling the pressures of his time contraints and want everyone to know that while he is certainly no stranger to pressure, this is stress like nothing he has experienced before. He is certainly concerned that time IS the enemy.

More to follow....expect updates regularly. And follow along on Juvenation, the JDRF advocacy blog starting in June to see Tony's progress.

The one missing map (the start actually) was in my mailbox today.

Thanks ACA for the quick turn around.

Yesterday afternoon the wonderful team at Taproot Films launched a Kickstarter project about the Type1Rider The Film documentary.

Although the first trailer is still just a wee bit bit away, here is the video teaser used as part of the Type1Rider The Film project introduction:

I am simply humbled and blown away by the outpouring of support for this project and the Tour Divide race attempt.  Thank you all so very much.  I am trying to get caught up on emails, messages, and posts to thank everyone.  I feel so honored and blessed.  Thank you.

With only 20 days to the start, I am feverishly working to get all the details completed.  Looks like snow will play a major role in the race this year, so I am working out logistics for better snow gear (MILES of hike a bike) and keeping all required diabetes supplies at the appropriate temps.

I will post the full trailer when it becomes available.  Thanks again!!!

Keep Choppin'!!!!!!!

15 May 2011

Did some shooting with Taproot Films at the UNC Wellness Center this morning and early afternoon.  Big thanks to the staff of the Wellness Center for setting this up.  We got some great shots and finished the interview with Chris Newport from Endurance NEWtrition.

Also saw this really old truck in the parking lot.  NOT your typical way to drive over for a few laps and a swim:

And I was able to get this big fella out of the parking lot and into the woods:

I also did about 45 minutes of strength work while the cameras where rolling.  Probably the last time I will be doing any resistace work before Tour Divide.  SO psyched, because I am not much into working out inside.

Much more fun to go outside and play!!

Looking forward to my TwitCast tonight.... so much went on this past week.

Another busy week ahead... and only 25 days to go.  Hard to believe I will be sleeping in Banff 3 weeks from tomorrow.  Whew.

Thought these would NEVER get here. Canadian section missing, email sent. VERY stoked:

Here is the Superfly with the frame bag on. They all work great. I need to work on getting handlebar bag installed today as some items need to be modified and moved to get it on there. These bags are GREAT! Very secure and pretty spacious.

I am a little worried about being able to carry everything, as the diabetes supplies are going to take some room. Thinking about carrying them alone in a very small bag on my back. Just big enough for a Pelican Case or two small ones.

Logistics are a major component of the Tour Divide, that is to be sure.

Rolling with Taproot Films today. They are SO dedicated to the spirit of this documentary, and the diabetes cause.

I cannot thank them enough.

Will mount the rest later. Need to get out for a ride. :)

Excited that bags are here. Will load them up before heading out. Just a very lite spin today.

Was out testing the aero bar clip-ons and the HERO cam that was mounted by Taproot Films.  Just an easy ride on the local the trails for about 3 hours.

Also, I was checking out the SPOT device I will be using for tracking while on Tour Divide.  Check out the public feed via the menu item "SPOT Share Page" or by clicking on the following link: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0dTuP2qou5TItYPzD66AXrfIBhvlqNjcz

My frame bags came in yesterday as well (Thanks Eric!!).  I am going to get some of the mounted and do a little loaded shake down ride tomorrow.

Still not 100% recovered from my GI illness, so just taking it easy and resting as much as possible.  31 days to go.

Going fast.
Dear Superfly,

I'm sorry.

Just looks unnatural. Like a liver and peanut butter sandwich. Feels good, works great. Not heavy.

Welcome to my new pump which was christened "Gomer" by one of my good friends. ;)

You forget what a new pump screen looks like. Well, Gomer, are you ready for a little trip?? LOL!

Happy Thursday to all!

Training is at fever pitch. Every workout and ride, every meal, every wink of sleep, or LACK of at this juncture, is critiqued and combed over for fine tuning. Tony is meeting with his nutrition team, his primary care physicians and his endocrinology team more often to ensure all systems are GO!!

Supplies, long since ordered, are slowly trickling in. The next steps, including mapping his ride, and taking the loaded bike out, are in the works and he is hopeful and remaining positive, in spite of less than desirable weather and an unfortunate gastro illness that has rendered him "off the trail" for a bit.

The powers that be at Taproot Films have started a website designed to provide information for the newly dubbed documentary:

Type1Rider, the film

Please visit the website at  http://www.type1riderthefilm.com for details and find out how YOU can help and be a part of this historic ride!

Thank you again for all of the positive messages and the support for Type1Rider.org. He appreciates the love and friendship tremendously! Keep Choppin'!!

02 May 2011

Hello again friends. Tony is finally on the other side of a rather nasty GI viral process and is happy to report he spent some quality time on his bike this weekend. A few fine tuning points and his companion on Tour Divide will be up and running at "optimal" condition.

He is uploading  the mapping and points of resupply and awaiting the remainder of crucial supplies, some related to cycling and others relating to logistically HOW he will carry the supplies needed to manage his diabetes. Critical planning, at this level, is required and you will be hearing more from me than him at this stage. He is head down and "chopping" away as it is crunch time, folks.

Thank you again from Type1Rider for your continuing emails and well wishes. Tony appreciates the love and support given here more than you can know.
